Symptoms and treatment of lung abscess
An abscess of the lungs is characterized by a purulent inflammatory process of the lung tissue with the formation of one or several limited cavities, which are most often surrounded by inflammatory infiltrate.
Most often, an abscess of the lungs occurs due to croupous pneumonia. The causative agents of the disease are staphylococci, streptococci, as well as diplococci. The primary abscess begins with chest injuries, aspiration of foreign objects, after surgery on the upper respiratory tract, by inhalation of mucus, blood, pus, and vomit. At the same time, bronchial blockage occurs and air does not enter part of the lungs, an airless space is formed in which suppuration occurs – an abscess.
Subdivided into two periods of the course of the disease:
1. The period before the breakthrough of the abscess in the bronchus
this is the period of the formation of the abscess, which lasts 10-12 days from the moment of formation. In this case, the patient may experience symptoms such as fever, cold, difficulty breathing, general weakness, night sweats. Initially, a slight dry cough is observed, which is gaining strength and becomes unbearable, painful.
A transitional period is possible in which the main clinical symptoms intensify.
2. The period after the breakthrough of the abscess in the bronchus
the period at which the abscess breaks, and suddenly. There are strong, purulent discharge (full mouth), which have a disgusting smell. This happens for several days. Over time, body temperature normalizes, it becomes easier to breathe, appetite appears, sleep is normalized, sweating decreases, and cough passes. The patient’s condition improves and stabilizes.
Most abscesses respond to therapeutic, conservative treatment. After 4-5 weeks, patients recover. In weakened patients, a lung abscess can become chronic, as a result of which pulmonary bleeding, pleurisy, pyopneumothorax, amyloidosis can occur.
If the abscess is not cured by therapeutic methods for 1.5-2 months, then surgical treatment is preferred.
